LA Public Golf Course Recommendation — DeBell Golf Club
LA Public Golf Course Recommendation — DeBell Golf Club
Located in the hills of Burbank, DeBell Golf Club is a relatively short public golf course that plays more challenging than its yardage might suggest.
What stood out to me the most was the combination of narrow fairways and significant elevation changes. At first glance, the shorter overall distance may make the course seem fairly easy, but the hilly terrain and tight layout make accuracy much more important than distance.
At the same time, these features make DeBell quite fun to play. If you enjoy shorter courses that still require strategy and accurate shots, DeBell offers a different experience from the flatter and wider public courses around Los Angeles.

⛰️ A Hilly Course with Plenty of Elevation Changes
One of the defining characteristics of DeBell Golf Club is its hilly terrain.
Located in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains, the course has frequent uphill and downhill shots rather than the mostly flat terrain found at many other public golf courses around Los Angeles.
Personally, I enjoyed the elevation changes because they kept the round from feeling repetitive. On several holes, you have to consider not only the distance but also the elevation when choosing a club.
The hills aren't extreme, but they add another element of strategy and make the course more interesting to play.
đŻ Short, Narrow, and More Difficult Than It Looks
At 5,608 yards from the Blue Tees, DeBell is quite short compared with many standard 18-hole golf courses.
However, short doesn't necessarily mean easy here.
The fairways felt relatively narrow to me, and when you combine that with the elevation changes, keeping the ball in the right position becomes important.
On a wide-open course, you may feel comfortable hitting driver aggressively from many tees. At DeBell, I found myself thinking more about accuracy and where I wanted to leave the ball for the next shot.
Because of this, DeBell feels more like a course that rewards accuracy and course management rather than pure distance.
đ A Different Golf Experience in the Hills
Another thing that makes DeBell interesting is its setting.
The course sits in the foothills above Burbank, giving it a noticeably different atmosphere from the flatter public golf courses around the LA area.
The surrounding hills and elevation changes give the course more character, and some holes offer nice views of the surrounding landscape.
If you normally play flatter courses, DeBell can be a fun change of pace.
đż Course Condition Could Be Better
The course condition was one of the weaker points for me when I played DeBell.
While the course was certainly playable, I felt that the overall maintenance and condition were somewhat disappointing compared with some of the other public golf courses I've played around Los Angeles.
For that reason, my personal rating is:
Course Condition ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5)
Course conditions can vary depending on the season and maintenance schedule, so this rating reflects my experience during my visit.
⏱️ Good Pace of Play
On the other hand, I was happy with the pace of play during my round.
I didn't experience excessive waiting between holes, and the round moved along at a comfortable pace.
Based on my experience:
Pace ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
Of course, pace can vary depending on the day, time, and how busy the course is.
đ️ Driving Range & Practice
DeBell Golf Club has a Driving Range, making it convenient to warm up before your round.
There is also a separate 9-hole Par-3 course, which can be a good option for practicing your short game or playing a quicker, more casual round.

⭐ Fairway Compass Highlights

✔ Narrow fairways make accuracy important
✔ Plenty of elevation changes add variety and strategy
✔ Course Condition ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5)
✔ Pace ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
✔ A very different experience from flatter LA public courses
Overall, I think DeBell Golf Club is a course that shouldn't be judged by its yardage alone.
At around 5,600 yards, it may look short on the scorecard, but the narrow layout and elevation changes make it more challenging than you might expect. Those same characteristics also give the course its personality and make the round more interesting.
The course condition was somewhat disappointing during my visit, but the good pace of play and unique hilly layout still make DeBell worth considering if you're looking for something different from the typical flat and wide public golf courses around Los Angeles.
đ️ What to Bring
Southern California sunshine can be strong, and you'll be outdoors for several hours during a round. A sun-protection face cover can be useful, especially on sunny days when you want some extra protection for your face and neck.
