LA Public Golf Course Recommendation — DeBell Golf Club

LA Public Golf Course Recommendation — DeBell Golf Club Located in the hills of Burbank, DeBell Golf Club is a relatively short public golf course that plays more challenging than its yardage might suggest. What stood out to me the most was the combination of narrow fairways and significant elevation changes . At first glance, the shorter overall distance may make the course seem fairly easy, but the hilly terrain and tight layout make accuracy much more important than distance. At the same time, these features make DeBell quite fun to play. If you enjoy shorter courses that still require strategy and accurate shots , DeBell offers a different experience from the flatter and wider public courses around Los Angeles. 📍 Location & Course Information 📍 Location: 1500 E Walnut Ave, Burbank, CA 91501 — View on Google Maps ⛳ Course: 18 Holes 🏌️ Par: 71 📏 Distance: 5,608 yards (Blue Tee) 🏙️ Location: Burbank / Verdugo Mountains foothills 🏌️ Driving Range: Avai...

LA Public Golf Course Recommendation — Woodley Lakes Golf Course

If you're looking for a comfortable and beginner-friendly public golf course in Los Angeles, Woodley Lakes Golf Course is a great option.

Located in the Sepulveda Basin in Van Nuys, Woodley Lakes is relatively flat with wide fairways, making it an enjoyable course to play without feeling too demanding.

For newer golfers who may find narrow fairways and significant elevation changes intimidating, Woodley Lakes is a great place to gain experience playing a full 18-hole course in a more relaxed setting.

Another major advantage is the natural grass driving range. While many driving ranges around Los Angeles use mats, Woodley Lakes gives you the opportunity to practice directly from real grass.

Woodley Lakes is one of the LA City Golf courses located within the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area.

The course is open and spacious, giving it a more relaxed atmosphere compared with many public golf courses closer to central Los Angeles.

⛳ Flat and Comfortable Course

One of the biggest characteristics of Woodley Lakes is its flat and open layout.

The fairways are relatively wide, so even if your tee shot misses slightly left or right, it's often easier to keep the ball in play. With very few significant uphill or downhill holes, the course is also comfortable to play.

That doesn't necessarily mean the course is short or without challenges. From the back tees, the course measures around 6,800 yards, and water hazards throughout the course add some strategy to your round.

Overall, however, the layout is fairly forgiving, making it a good choice for beginner to intermediate golfers.

If you're relatively new to golf and looking to gain more experience playing a full 18-hole course, Woodley Lakes is one I would recommend.

🌿 Course Condition & Pace

For an LA public golf course, I find the overall course conditions at Woodley Lakes to be quite good.

Fairway Compass Course Condition: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)

The fairways and greens are generally well maintained, making for an enjoyable round. Rather than expecting the conditions of a high-end resort course, I think Woodley Lakes offers a solid level of maintenance for a public course in Los Angeles.

The pace of play is also generally good.

Fairway Compass Pace: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)

Of course, pace can vary depending on the day and time, especially on busy weekends, but overall I haven't found the course to feel excessively slow.

🏌️‍♂️ Natural Grass Driving Range

One of my favorite features at Woodley Lakes is that the driving range uses natural grass rather than hitting mats.

Many public driving ranges around Los Angeles have mat-only hitting areas, but at Woodley Lakes you can practice your iron shots directly from real grass.

This gives you a practice experience that is much closer to playing on the course and allows you to work on ball contact and divots in a more realistic setting.

Even if you're not playing a round, Woodley Lakes is a great place to visit when you want to practice from natural grass.

There are also putting and chipping areas where you can work on your short game.

🌫️ Watch Out for Morning Fog

There is one thing to keep in mind if you're planning an early-morning round at Woodley Lakes.

Because the course is located in the Sepulveda Basin near lakes and wetlands, heavy fog can sometimes develop early in the morning.

On particularly foggy mornings, visibility can become limited enough that it may be difficult to clearly see the fairway or green from the tee box.

If you prefer one of the first tee times of the day, I recommend checking the weather and fog conditions before heading to the course.

Once the fog clears, however, the wide and flat layout makes for a comfortable and relaxing round.

💡 Tee Time Reservations

Tee times for Woodley Lakes Golf Course can be booked online through the official LA City Golf reservation system.

If you're planning to play on a weekend or during a popular time of day, I recommend checking for available tee times in advance.

⭐ Fairway Compass Highlights

Woodley Lakes Golf Course isn't necessarily a flashy or highly challenging championship course. Instead, I think its biggest strength is that it's a comfortable and approachable LA public course that's great for both playing and practicing.

The wide fairways and flat layout make the course less intimidating for beginners, while the natural grass driving range is another major reason to visit.

🏌️ What to Bring

Southern California sunshine can be strong, and you'll be outdoors for several hours during a round. A sun-protection face cover can be useful, especially on sunny days when you want some extra protection for your face and neck.

Since there is no caddie, having a rangefinder can also be very helpful for checking distances and planning your shots.
