LA Public Golf Course Recommendation — Rio Hondo Golf Club
If you're looking for a beautiful public golf course in the LA area without paying a high green fee, Rio Hondo Golf Club is a great option.
Located in Downey, Rio Hondo offers a surprisingly scenic course for its price range. With plenty of trees, greenery, and attractive landscaping throughout the course, it feels a little more special than you might expect from an affordable public golf course.
The course can be challenging, though. Some fairways feel relatively narrow, and several holes run close and parallel to each other, so accuracy off the tee is definitely important.

⛳ Course Overview
One of my favorite things about Rio Hondo is the combination of affordable golf and a beautiful course setting.
The course has plenty of mature trees and landscaped areas that make the round visually enjoyable. For a public golf course at this price point, I think Rio Hondo offers very good value.
However, don't expect the course to be easy just because it isn't particularly expensive.
Some of the fairways are relatively narrow, so keeping the ball in play can be challenging. If your driver tends to miss left or right, Rio Hondo can quickly become a more difficult round than expected.
đŻ Narrow Fairways and Adjacent Holes
One thing to be aware of at Rio Hondo is that some holes run fairly close and parallel to each other.
Because of the layout, balls from neighboring holes seem to come over fairly often. Your own shot can also easily end up on an adjacent hole if it gets too far offline.
For that reason, it's a good idea to stay aware of golfers playing nearby in addition to watching your own shots.
The combination of narrower fairways and closely spaced holes makes accuracy especially valuable at Rio Hondo.
⚠️ One Downside — Pace of Play
Another thing I've experienced at Rio Hondo is that pace of play can occasionally be slow.
It's not necessarily an issue every round, but there are times when groups start to back up and the round takes longer than expected.
If you have plans immediately after your round, I would recommend leaving yourself a little extra time.
đ Fairway Compass Recommendation
For me, the biggest appeal of Rio Hondo Golf Club is that you can play a beautiful course at a relatively affordable price.
The trees, landscaping, and overall atmosphere make the course enjoyable, while the narrower fairways add enough difficulty to keep the round interesting.
The main things to keep in mind are the occasional slow pace of play and the close proximity of some neighboring holes, where stray balls can sometimes come into your fairway.
Overall, if you're looking for good value and a scenic public golf course in the LA area, Rio Hondo is definitely worth checking out.
đ️ What to Bring
Southern California sunshine can be strong, and you'll be outdoors for several hours during a round. A sun-protection face cover can be useful, especially on sunny days when you want some extra protection for your face and neck.

Since there is no caddie, having a rangefinder can also be very helpful for checking distances and planning your shots.
